LA Times article lambasts Road Rules for its drama and questions future of series

A new article came out in the LA Times which basically criticizes Road Rules for the treatment of its castmembers and creation of drama within the cast.

The article itself begins with the Kina (Extreme) and Angel (Viewers Revenge) Pit Battle, which Angel famously called Kina a transvestite. So you get the idea. Both Susie (Australia) and Adam (The Quest) contribute to the article and call themselves willing participants in the madness. They also talk a small bit about Abram's (South Pacific) departure.

The article briefly mentions the sagging ratings of the show, which was recently moved to Wednesdays after Real World: Denver to help its numbers. While producers seem to resorting to low-brow stunts and cheap theatrics to get viewers in, this article seems to be invoking Road Rules of yesteryear, when it wasn't so much about the challenges, missions, or drama. It was about six people living in a RV together and learning about each other. (If you haven't seen an episode of old Road Rules you won't know this is referring to.)

But the article nevertheless points out obvious flaws in the show. Check it out, it's a good read.

Pretty good article. I really do wish they would return to the original format of the show. but then, it got pretty crappy ratings so I guess it's no surprise they switched it up especially after two years of being off the air.

Still, I think that if they just kept pairing it with the Real World, it would do fine in ratings. I just think this new format is a little lame and the Pit is sort of like the retarded cousin to the RW/RR Challenges.

man its been a WHILE since the show was NORMAL. i would say since Season 7.

Because: Season 8 they went on the boat, which was abnormal for ROAD rules.
Season 9 they had the stupid Road Master.
Season 10 they started voting people off (BAD BAD BAD choice)
Season 11 was great, despite the vote-offs
Season 12 and 13 just got OUT OF HAND with the number of vote offs!!!
and now??! Season 14? Dont even get me started. its a joke.

bring it back to how it was in Season 1-7...even 10 or 11.

Tell me something I don't know!!! Road rules has been whack for a while, and this "new" season didn't help at all. They need to go back to the drawing board. I remember back in the days when road rules was enjoyable, when they would hook up with the real worlders and have a challenge against them... There's more of a rivlary or connection when they do it like that. But, that's just my 2 cents

I have completely fogotten about road rules and I don't bother with real world anymore since every week it is the same thing.

They aren't getting ratings because MTV doesn't like to air reruns of the shows for people who missed them. That's the same thing that happened with xtreme.

Oh...and the fact that this season sucks my ballsack

Really the show needs to go back to how the show was made, having 5 or 6 people who are stuck together whether they're good at missions or not. No more voting off, no more stupid roadmasters, no more fake drama. The last season I can recall that stuck to the original theme was Latin America, from there it just went south. My favorite season to this day is still the Northern Trail, cause it stayed true to its roots.

Its hard to see road rules going back to that form let alone real world to its original form for that matter because the viewers expect more of the same of what is going on but with more drama, so much so that it becomes rediculous. Maybe finally ending it with one true to its roots farewell season is all that can be left to do, who knows though. This last crappy season might just be what ends it.

I don't think this season is that bad but It is deffintly not the greatest. I mean they deffintly should of started with a whole new cast screw the vets they already did this and won a car and money from challeneges and last time I recalled Road Rulers never once lost a final mission. For god sakes the extreme kids even won which was pathetic.

This season would work if:
A] There was no pit crew and no pit
B] After they failed 3 Missions the viewers get to kick someone off the RV.
C] Someone is randomly placed on the RV.

Thats how that whole Interactive thing should of been done in my opinion
